Description

The Hand That Stirs the Sea was named for the hand-like form that appears to come down from the top of the painting. That shape seems to reach into the composition and disturb the color below it, giving the work the feeling of a force stirring the sea.

The painting is not a literal seascape, but the movement of the colors creates the impression of water being shifted, mixed, or pulled into motion. The hand-like form gives the viewer a clear point of entry, as if something from above is setting the entire surface into movement.
